    When using an HVL-F28RMA flash with a camera equipped with a global shutter image sensor, flash photography can be synchronized across the entire range of shutter speeds available on the camera, enabling more effective flash exposures than conventional High-Speed Sync (HSS) photography.

Preparation

Check the System Software Version

Follow the instructions below to check the system software version:

  1. Connect a Sony camera to the HVL-F28RMA flash.
    The illustration below shows the camera menu screen displayed when the flash is connected to the ILCE-9M3. When connecting the flash to other cameras, refer to the Help Guide for each camera.
  2. On the camera, select MenuExposure/ColorFlashExternal Flash SetExt. Flash Cust. Set.VersionFlash.

  3. The system software version is displayed.

    Note: If the system software version is Ver. 2.00, the update is not required.

The latest version of the system software update is compatible with the following versions of Microsoft Windows:

  • Windows 11

Computer Hardware

This system software update requires the following hardware:

  • Intel-based PCs or AMD-based PCs (ARM-based PCs are not supported)
  • Hard drive space: 500 MB or more
  • RAM: 512 MB or more

Note: Please close all other application software before updating the system software.

Power Requirements

  • Power source:
    • Two new LR6 (AA-sized) alkaline batteries

    or

    • Two fully charged AA-sized rechargeable nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries

    Note: The update can be performed only when the remaining battery level is sufficient. We recommend using new or fully charged batteries.

Hardware Requirements

  • Use a Micro USB cable compliant with USB standards.
    Note: Update functionality is not guaranteed with any other USB cable.

Important Notice

  • Use two new LR6 (AA size) alkaline batteries or two fully charged AA-sized rechargeable nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries.
  • Do not remove the battery during the update as the sudden loss of power may cause the device to stop working.
  • Prevent your computer from entering Sleep mode.
  • Do not connect the device to any device other than your computer.

How to Download the Updater:

  1. Make sure that you are logged on as a user with administrative rights.
  2. After reading the disclaimer, click Download.
  3. The Update_HVLF28RMAV200.exe file will start downloading.
    File Size:2.31 MB (2 429 064 bytes)
  4. Save the file to the desktop of your computer (recommended).
    Note: With the default settings of Microsoft Edge, the update file will be saved in your Downloads folder. Click the Desktop tile from the Start screen, and then use File Explorer to find the downloaded file in the Downloads folder.

Step 1: Start the Updater

  1. Close all programs currently running on your computer.
  2. Double-click the Update_HVLF28RMAV200.exe file that you downloaded. Do not connect the device to the computer at this point.
  3. The System Software Updater starts.
  4. Turn on the device.
  5. Use a Micro USB cable compliant with USB standards. Then connect the device to your computer. When the USB cable is connected, the LED of the TEST button turns off.
     Connect the Multi/Micro USB terminal on the right side of the Flash unit, when viewed from the front side, to the computer with a USB cable.

    Note: If the computer cannot find the device, the message “Could not find the device for this update” appears on the computer screen. If this happens, try the following:
    • Disconnect the USB cable and reconnect it.
    • If the computer has multiple USB ports, try a different port.
  6. After confirming the connection to the computer, click Next. The current version number and updated version number will appear on the lower left side of the screen.
    • System Software Updater screen displayed when the update is required:
      The [Current Version] on the lower left of the screen is showing 1.00, and the [Version after the update] is showing 2.00.
    • System Software Updater screen displayed when the update is not required:
      The [Current version] and [Version after the update] are displayed as 2.00 at the bottom left of the screen.
  7. After confirming that the current software version is Ver. 1.00, click Next. If the current system software version is Ver. 2.00, the update is not required.
    In this case, follow the steps below:
    1. Disconnect the device from the computer.
    2. Click Finish.
    3. Turn off the device.
    4. Remove the battery pack.
    5. Reinsert the battery pack.
    6. Turn the camera back on.
    Note: If the message “Would you like to install this device software?” (Publisher: Sony Corporation) appears on screen, click Install.
  8. The device will be automatically reset.
  9. Start the update. After the device automatically restarts, the update begins and a progress bar appears. The update takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.

    IMPORTANT: Never turn off the device or disconnect the USB cable while the update is in progress.

  10. When the update is complete, the device automatically restarts, which may take a few minutes.
    When the screen appears, click Finish, and then disconnect the USB cable. Turn off the device and turn it on again.

Step 2: Confirm the System Software Version of Your Device

  1. Connect one of Sony's cameras to theHVL-F28RMA flash.
  2. On the camera, select MenuExposure/ColorFlashExternal Flash SetExt. Flash Cust. Set.VersionFlash.

  3. The system software version is displayed.
