How to add a Computer, Control Panel or Network shortcut icon to the Desktop in Windows 8 and 8.1.

    TheComputer, Control Panel and Network icons are not shown on the Desktop by default. Follow these steps to manually add any of these icons to the Desktop.

    IMPORTANT: This procedure must be performed while logged in as Administrator or to an account with Administrator rights.

    1. In the new Windows User Interface (UI) Start screen, click the Desktop tile.
    2. On the Desktop, right-click an empty space on the screen, and from the menu click to select Personalize.
    3. In the Personalization window, on the left-hand column, click Change Desktop Icons.
    4. In the Desktop Icon Settings window, click to place a check in the box next to the icon you wish to add to the Desktop, and then click the OK button.
