What are you doing career-wise at the moment?
I have recently gone freelance and am currently focusing on growing my photography business. At the moment I do a lot of wedding photography, I specialise in non-traditional, off-beat weddings, (www.oneperfectdayphotography.com) and I work on my personal projects (www.helenasofia.com).

For my personal documentary work I often explore the themes of immigration and identity, as I moved here 5 years ago myself (I am originally from Holland), these are subjects close to my heart.

What is it about photography that interests you so much?
I am interested in photography for different reasons. Photography allows me to creatively express my emotions and feelings and document the world as I see it. I also believe photography can be a powerful communication tool and a great way to get points across.

I have a strong interest in the history of photography also and alternative processes. I love combining digital and analog work and I'm currently setting up my own darkroom at home.

What is your ultimate career goal?
My ultimate career goal is to keep doing what I do with passion and to keep growing as a photographer and professional in the industry every day. I love learning about the art and profession of photography and one day would like to be able to teach others about photography also. And of course my goal is to deliver work I'm proud of and have happy clients, no matter what I do.

How do you get the perfect shot?
I don't know if 'the perfect' shot exists, but for me good shots are all about having passion for your subject. If you have an emotional bond with your subject, it translates through in your work. Before I start on a series I always try to do as much research as I can. Once I have an emotional connection with the subject I'll start shooting and the best shots often happen when I'm least concerned with taking the photos.

How has winning the AIPA competition contributed to your career goals?
Winning the AIPA award was a wonderful surprise. It has helped me gain more confidence as a photographer and given me a great opportunity to further develop my expertise. The AIPA provides a great network of professionals and support system. And of course winning new camera gear was great too!
