Professional make-up artist Grayson Coutts loves the idea of transforming clients from beautiful to amazing.

Armed with his Sony Bloggie Grayson provides online tutorials and advice on everything make-up from fashion shows and photo shoots to product reviews and everyday wear.

What do you enjoy most about Make-up Artistry?

The transformation. Makeup isn't just about covering that blemish or finding a good mascara. Of course it can be and there's definitely something in that but there's also so much more. It can be about becoming someone totally different, trying on a different look and experiencing the change. It's a thrill every time.

What sort of work have you done in the past?

My background is primarily in photography makeup. I've worked on various photo shoots and spreads for New Zealand designers, media and personalities. However, I’m not limited to that - I've also worked on fashion shows and productions, as well special events including weddings, balls and costume makeup.

What is your ultimate career goal?

I have always aimed to provide the best service to every client, from the hyper creative brief to the natural 'no makeup' look. At the end of the day you have to please the person you're working for and they always come first. However, I feel that makeup remains one of those ‘mystery talents' for the majority of people. I want to demonstrate that it's not all smoke and mirrors and that you, yes you right there, can do it too.

What are some of the exciting events you will be working at this year?
What are you looking forward to most?

I always look forward to Fashion Week. This year will be very different and I'm looking forward to breaking out of the mould and being a bit more creative. Additionally I have a few photo shoots in the works, one in particular for a top NZ fashion label which I can't yet announce but it's very exciting!

What do you think are the key characteristics of a great Make-up Artist?
I've always said that anyone can learn makeup – it's not rocket science after all! In all honesty, the difference between a good makeup artist and a great makeup artist is passion. If you have the knowledge to execute, the creative mind to design, and the drive to succeed then nothing can stop you if you have passion. Like most things you have to want it to deserve it. Also, no one ever stops learning so never dismiss another artist because you think you know more than them – instead be open to new ideas and new ways of doing things.

How will the Sony Bloggie contribute to your career as an emerging make-up artist?
People are starting to become more demanding with their makeup – they want to know what's new, what's in fashion and how they can wear that. Because I can now provide people with a 'behind the scenes' look at the makeup industry from a fashion perspective and then show them step by step how to achieve that look for everyday wear, I feel I can meet these growing industry demands. A huge thank you to the amazing team at Sony!
