2011 will be a big year for Anthony Brosnan who plans to start a small business and complete his honours degree at the same time. The third year Creative technologies student has been awarded the annual Sony Creative Technologies scholarship at AUT. The scholarship offers full payment of fees for Anthony's third year of study.
Anthony has a keen interest in art, design and technology and is enjoying the chance to further develop his skills in the area.
What is it about technology that interests you so much?
I have always been fascinated with merging my interest of art and design with technology and the way in which we are able to use different pieces of technology and bring them together to be artistic and create amazing pieces of work in many different mediums such as digital art and media.
This is your final year of study, are you planning any further study or are you going to enter the workforce?
I am planning to combine both my studies and work next year. I plan to do my honours in Creative Technologies at Auckland University of Technology as well as start a small business/studio/gallery with my friend Nick Wilson in Auckland. We are looking forward to working alongside and collaborating with other studios to boost our portfolios and make contacts in the creative and technology industries. The work Nick and I plan on doing in our studio ranges from photography, design, multimedia, installations and experimenting with visual technology such as stereoscopy.
What is your ultimate career goal?
I would really like to own a studio and art gallery based in New Zealand that features work from around the world in different creative industries, in which we collaborate with others.
Do you have any thoughts on the launch of 3D TV this year?
We have a Sony3D TV in colab at AUT so it's amazing being able to use it, especially for me as I'm currently doing a short animation in stereoscopic. I see people picking up 3D TVs rather quickly as it is the largest step forward in TV technology since the development of colour. I think it's fantastic bringing these cinema features to the home, being able to watch movies, sports and play games in 3D, hopefully this will also encourage people to buy more movies.
How much do you see technology evolving over the next ten years – can you give some examples?I have a view that technology will continue developing at this rather rapid pace. I think household items such as TVs, stereo, computers will be networked and linked together for a better flow and ease of use for consumers. I think software developments will be more of a focus rather than the hardware.
Making interfaces similar and universal for set branded products. I feel that there is still a lot of development which can go into touch technology and combining this with holographic visuals would be amazing, as seen on the iron man movies ( I would be very impressed if technology has advanced to that level by 2020).
I believe that a major focus will be in developing medical instruments which are more accurate when operating and lower the risk of failure. I really hope that technology will continue to surprise us with its magic like capabilities.
How has the Sony scholarship contributed to your study and your career goals?
The Sony scholarship has helped immensely. I have been able to put more money towards my projects which is helping me produce higher quality work and achieve better results. Simple things like tutorial books, printing and equipment. Also the Sony scholarship has got me recognition for the work I have done, boosted my confidence and will definitely help me start up my business next year.
