RECYCLING & REUSE / Finding better options to reduce waste
Sony is committed to environmental conservation activities including the development and use of recycling and reuse processes. In parts of the world, this means Sony has developed tailored solutions such as:

  • specialised recycling and reuse processes for television and computer monitor components in Japan, Europe and the USA
  • membership of recycling and reuse programmes such as the Consumer Education Initiative (CEI) in the USA development of new recycling technologies such as Limonene, which is extracted from the skins of tangerines and other citrus fruits for the breakdown of polystyrene packaging.
  • Safe disposal of your batteries
Sony New Zealand can accept small quantities of all types of non-commercial batteries at collection points in its Sony Style stores. If you have used batteries in large numbers, or commercial batteries that you wish to dispose of, please contact your nearest local authority
    Recycling Sony's broadcast-type videocassettes
As part of its commitment to environmental conservation, Sony has developed new technology to improve the recycling of used broadcast-type videocassettes.

These videocassettes are normally collected from TV stations and converted into pellets before being blended with other plastic material for reuse. In general, this new blended plastic should contain no more than 30% recycled material as higher proportions can lower can the strength of the new plastic resin.

Sony has developed a new blending technology which uses special additives to restore the strength of the recycled plastic material in the used broadcast-type videocassettes. This means the new blended resin can have a composition of up to 85% recycled plastic without losing its strength.
